Sweets Announce Two Anteaters for 2016

December 31, 2015 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, Wash - The Walla Walla Sweets added another pair to their roster on Thursday morning. This time, it was the UC Irvine Anteaters that gave two key players in the Sweets' quest for a championship this summer. Walla Walla welcomes in Ryan Johnston and Griffin Mazur for the year.

Ryan Johnston, a 5-foot 10-inch, 160 pound outfielder, will join the Sweets from San Diego and Cathedral Catholic High School. During his senior campaign, he hit .278 with seven doubles, 14 RBIs and 12 runs scored. Johnston will play his first season as a freshman this spring for the Anteaters.

"Ryan Johnston will be a two way guy for UC Irvine," Sweets' manager Frank Mutz said. "The outfielder and RHP will be used in relief this season for the Anteaters and most likely will see time in one of the corner outfield positions. Ryan is a very offensive player who rarely strikes out. Players like Johnston, who consistently put the ball in play and can hit behind and move runners, are so valuable to a ball club."

Griffin Mazur, a 5-foot 10-inch, 190 pound catcher, hails from Moorpark, CA and is also currently a freshman at UCI. For Moorpark High School, he hit .344 with seven doubles and 22 RBIs his senior season. He found success before 2015, as he was named an All-American by Perfect Game as a sophomore and a junior.

"Griffin Mazur, fondly known as "Griff," is an outstanding receiver with a great arm and quick release," Mutz said. "What I like about Griff is he does an amazing job handling a pitching staff and is very offensive. He is a complete player and will see significant time in Irvine's lineup this year. Mazur has played for me in the past and he has always been a strong leader and a tremendous ball player. I so happy to have such an incredible catching core."

The Walla Walla Sweets will open the 2016 season of WCL baseball in June of 2016. Season tickets are on sale now. For more information about these and other ticketing options visit wallawallasweets.com, stop by the Sweets Shoppe in downtown Walla Walla, or call 509.522.BALL (2255).
