Sweets Announce Signing of Huskies Pair

WALLA WALLA, Wash- The Walla Walla Sweets were proud to announce a pair of signings from their home state of Washington on Thursday morning. They will be bringing two Huskies onto the roster for 2016, including one returner from the 2015 season. UW will send Willie MacIver and Ben Baird to Walla Walla.

Willie MacIver, a 6-foot, 180 pound catcher, returns to the Sweets from the 2015 season. After finishing up his freshman season at UW, he will look to improve on a stellar first season in the West Coast League. In his 2015 campaign, he hit .215 with four double and eight RBIs in 30 games for the Sweets, but his largest impact was from behind the plate, where he was the team's top receiver. He finished the year fourth in the WCL in putouts for a catcher (191) and second in assists (38) despite playing 11 fewer games than the leader.

"Will MacIver was one the best defensive catchers in the WCL last summer," Sweets' manager Frank Mutz said. "A plus arm and quick release can shut a good running team down. I also consider Willie to be an offensive threat and will definitely be one of our captains this summer."

Ben Baird, a 6-foot 2-inch, 185 pound right-handed pitcher, will join the Sweets from Agoura, CA after finishing up his senior season at Agoura Hills High School. Baird was recognized by Perfect Game as a 2015 Underclassman First Team All-American and was known for his ability to contribute on the mound and in the field as he played all infield positions in high school. His sophomore year, he hit .265 with a home run and 12 runs scored in 30 games.

"Baird, a UW commit. is an exceptional athlete," Mutz said. "He can play multiple positions and is one of the top high school prospects in Southern California. We cut back on having HS commits for this summer, but Baird is so advanced; he plays like a mature player and his baseball IQ is off the charts. A very exciting player."
