Sweets Add a Pair of 'Zags for the Summer

February 25, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, Wash - The Walla Walla Sweets stayed in state for this week's signing as they added two players from Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. The two 'Zags who will join the staff are Patrick Chung and Nick Nyquist.

Chung, a 5-foot 7-inch, 165 pound infielder from Everett, Wash, is familiar with the West Coast League. He played eight games for the Kitsap BlueJackets last season and hit .300 with three doubles and three RBIs. He also matched up against the Sweets during his time with the Thurston County Senators in non-league play. During the three-game series, he went 3-10 with an RBI. For Gonzaga this season, Chung is hitting .333 in four games with one RBI.

"I'm really looking forward to being a member of the Walla Walla Sweets this year," Chung said. "I know the WCL is a competitive league that challenges each player's abilities and I look forward to these challenges as they are invaluable in helping us better ourselves. My goals for this summer are to contribute to the team, both on and off the field, and hopefully we can win the championship."

"Chung will bring stability to our defense which was a problem for the Sweets last summer," Sweets' manager Frank Mutz said. "Not only will Chung shore up the right side of our infield, he will add to the top of our lineup with his speed and ability to put the ball in play with authority. Usually a strong defensive player lacks some offensive capabilities, but not Patrick; he is a complete player."

Nyquist, a 6-foot 3-inch, 210 pound infielder, is in the middle of his sophomore season for the 'Zags. The Coeur d'Alene native played in 15 games as a freshman and hit .250 for Gonzaga. At Coeur d'Alene High School, he was the Idaho Gatorade Player of the Year in 2014 after hitting .506 with six home runs and 34 RBIs. Nyquist is another player who is familiar with the WCL, playing for Wenatchee last summer. With the AppleSox he hit .254 in 52 games with four doubles and 21 RBIs.

"I played for Wenatchee last summer and I had a great time, having everything in the northwest close to home is really nice and it is such a great league as well," Nyquist said. "I am looking forward to pursuing a championship in Walla Walla this summer."

"We will use Nick primarily as a 3rd baseman, but he will help us at 1st as well," Mutz said. "Nick is a solid corner guy and will get a chance to hit in the middle of the lineup. After the summer he had in the WCL, we look to him as a veteran on the club leading us on our pennant chase."

The Walla Walla Sweets will open the 2016 season presented by Columbia REA, on June 3 against the Victoria HarbourCats. Season tickets and mini-plans are on sale now.
