Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

After growing up just a few miles from the Edge Ice Arena in the Chicago suburbs, Waterloo Black Hawks forward Ryan Papa scored two goals Tuesday during his first USHL game in the building, leading the Hawks to a 4-1 win against the Chicago Steel.

Papa broke a scoreless tie 5:36 into the second period, taking a cross-ice feed from Brandon Salerno and lifting a shot from the left wing circle under the crossbar. Less than two minutes later, the Steel tied the game during a power play; Alex Roos slipped a chance through the pads of Cal Petersen.

The Hawks took the lead for good while shorthanded 3:55 after the second intermission on a low, hard shot to the stick side of Alex Sakellaropoulos by Zach Stepan. Justin Kloos put Waterloo ahead by multiple goals for the first time at 6:32, finishing a tap-in after Chris Leibinger's shot was partially blocked. Papa capped the scoring at 14:21, capitalizing on a turnover in the slot with another high wrister.

Petersen earned the win with 31 saves. The decision moves Waterloo into a tie with the Lincoln Stars for third place in the USHL Western Conference.

The Hawks resume the home portion of their schedule Friday with a matchup against the Stars. Waterloo will wear special St. Patrick's Day jerseys during the contest, presented by Tyson, which will be auctioned after the game. The first 1,000 in attendance will also receive a poster commemorating P.K. O'Handley's 1,000th USHL game from Karen's Print Rite.
