Sweeney Named CPL Pitcher of the Week
MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Kevin Sweeney from Drury University was named the Coastal Plain League's Rawlings Pitcher of the Week on Monday afternoon for the fifth week of play (June 24-30).
"It's a cool honor, but I'm taking it with a grain of salt," Sweeney said. "It's more important for us to win games to make a push and make it to the playoffs."
Sweeney was the starting pitcher for Martinsville on June 30 against the Peninsula Pilots. Sweeney pitched a Mustangs season-high eight shutout innings and earned the win to put his record at 2-3 this season. In the victory, Sweeney also had a Mustangs season-high eight strikeouts. The Pilots only managed to scatter three hits and one batter earned a base on balls.
"My approach will stay the same," Sweeney said. "I need to stick with what I'm doing well and hopefully more positive results will follow."
On the season, Sweeney has a 3.67 ERA in a team-leading 34.1 innings pitched. Sweeney also leads the team with 26 strikeouts and has only walked three batters.
Martinsville is now 9-20 on the season, and 0-1 in the second half.
The Mustangs return to Hooker Field on Friday night for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch with the Morehead City Marlins. On Friday the Mustangs will celebrate the Fourth of July with "Fireworks Night" at Hooker Field.
