Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: For the fourth time in four games, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders scored before the Rochester Red Wings (Minnesota Twins) had a chance to hit. But unlike the first three affairs at Frontier Field, the Red Wings responded and defeated Dave Miley's club, 5-4. SWB saw its four-game win streak snapped while Rochester halted a seven-game slide as it improved to 3-11.
LET'S GET SERIESOUS: Despite Thursday's loss, the RailRiders posted their first series win of 2013 by taking three of four at Frontier Field. The team's prior series victory in a true four-game road set came from Aug. 6-9, 2012, also at Frontier Field against the Red Wings. This time around, the RailRiders outscored the Red Wings over the four-gamer, 22-6.
ROAD WARRIORS: After getting swept by the defending IL champion Pawtucket Red Sox in their first home series, and settling for a split on their rain-shortened PNC Field set against Rochester, the RailRiders posted a 4-2 record on their weather-clipped road trip.
PITCHING PROWESS: SWB pitching had not allowed a run in 20 consecutive innings before the Red Wings four-run first on Thursday.
FIRST-FRAME WOES: The team's string of pitching success came to a halt at the expense of Dellin Betances (0-2). The right-hander allowed the first four Rochester hitters to reach and score. His first-inning ERA stands at 40.40. Opponents have hit .579 against him during the opening inning of his three starts.
HEATING UP: David Adams went 2-for-4 with his homer, a walk and scored twice. After starting the season 2-for-12 (.167), the third baseman has gone 9-for-19 (.474) to lift his season-long contact clip to .355.
SCORING SURGE: While starting the season 1-6, the RailRiders scored a total of 18 runs (2.6/g). In taking four of five since, the squad has crossed the plate 34 times (6.8/g).
HOME RUN HITTER: Melky Mesa enjoyed a 3-for-4 night that included his third home run of the season. Not only have all three of his dingers come against the Red Wings, all of the team's seven have come at the expense of Rochester pitching.
WHAT A RELIEF: Jim Miller and Josh Spence gave the RailRiders a chance to come back by combining on four scoreless innings of relief. The duo allowed just two hits and struck out eight while walking none.
OFF THE RAILS: Hard winds gusted at nearly 30 mph towards left field most of the night...The loss was the team's first both when reaching double-digit hits and when hitting a home run...The RailRiders have scored first in 10 of their 12 games...Five of the team's seven losses have seen the opponent rally from a deficit...Rochester's 28 hits on the series included 24 singles...The Red Wings won despite a 1-for-4 showing with men in scoring position on Wednesday...They went 2-for-33 (.061) with men in prime real estate on the series...Rochester was off to the franchise's worst start since at least 1940 entering the night.
