Swashbucklers \'Cowboy Up' For 2009

March 12, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL)
Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release

LAKE CHARLES -The Louisiana Swashbucklers indoor football team today signed three former McNeese State Cowboys to join them for another championship run in 2009. Center Lance Fremin, defensive back Jonathan Walker, and defensive lineman John Paul Jones will join the Bucs when they meet for training camp beginning on March 28th. The three join prior McNeese signees Trey Bennett, (LB), Jordy Johnson (FB), and current McNeese assistant coach Buck Harris who also played with the Cowboys until 2005. This will be the first professional experience for Fremin and Walker.

Fremin was a four-year letterman for the Cowboys in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008. The 6'1, 305 pound center started his collegiate career as a guard and moved to center in ‘05. He played three games in 2006 before an injury in Toledo forced him to miss the rest of the season, which he got back after applying for a medical redshirt. He received All-Southland Conference honors in 2007. His father Jerry is a former assistant football coach at McNeese. Fremin, who had been keeping his playing options open for the upcoming season, explained why he chose to stay local and play for the Swashbucklers. "The reason I stayed in Lake Charles is it makes it easier to finish my schooling at McNeese, and I have more opportunities of getting closer to my coaching career", said Fremin. The Starksville, Mississippi native is on schedule to graduate from McNeese State University in May.

Jonathan Walker finished at McNeese as a four-year letterman from 2004-07, cumulating 228 tackles with six interceptions and 22 passes broken up. He was a first-team Southland Conference honoree in 2007. Walker is a Lake Charles native who played his prep ball at Washington-Marion before enrolling at McNeese.

The Swashbuckler veteran Jones has become a fan favorite for the over the last two seasons, and begins his fourth year as a pro with two indoor championships. John Paul earned the nickname "Fluffy" in 2008 with his big smile and by knocking the ‘stuffing' out of opposing quarterbacks. But that nickname may not stick this season as Jones will report to camp at 6'2, 280, about 40 pounds lighter than last year. After growing up in Carencro, Jones attracted the attention of plenty of quarterbacks during his playing days at McNeese that ended after the 2004 season. He is anticipated to continue his dominate play on the line after being named the Intense Football Leagues' "Most Valuable Player" last year.

"It has really been a blessing to have a quality program like McNeese right here in our own backyard", said Buc's head coach Darnell Lee, also a McNeese graduate."We feel the new players have the talent to make an immediate impact"

The Swashbucklers home opener kicks off April 25th when they host the Florida Kings and begin play in the inaugural season of the Southern Indoor Football League. All home games will begin at 6:30 in the Lake Charles Civic Center.
