Super Bowl Official To Speak To SIFL Refs
March 12, 2009 - Southern Indoor Football League (SIFL) News Release
LAFAYETTE, La. (March 12, 2009) - The Super Bowl official who made the call on Santonio Holmes' game-winning catch will be lending his expertise to the Southern Indoor Football League's inaugural season officiating efforts.
Greg Gautreaux, who served as Field Judge for the Pittsburgh Steelers-Arizona Cardinals match-up in Super Bowl XLIII, will conduct a series of seminars during the SIFL's official clinic this weekend in Lafayette, La.
The Lafayette, La. native has worked NFL games for seven seasons. He was the NFL's highest-rated field judge in 2008, grading out to 99 percent for the accuracy of his calls.
The most famous one, of course, was Holmes getting both feet in bounds in the right corner of the end zone that gave the Steelers a 27-23 victory over the Cardinals in one of the best finishes in Super Bowl history.
Prior to the NFL, Gautreaux spent four summers working NFL Europe games and 12 years in Conference USA, ten of those alongside SIFL Commissioner Dan J. Blum.
``Greg's a close friend and an outstanding official,'' Blum said. ``I appreciate him taking time out of his schedule and giving our crews the benefit of his insight and experience. He's been where our officials want to be.''
The day-long seminar will allow for officials to further understand SIFL rules and procedures for the 2009 season. Four crews will rotate throughout the season. Of the 20 crew members, 18 have at least one year of indoor experience.
``Officiating in indoor football has always been a source of ridicule," Blum said. "That won't be the case in the SIFL.''
