Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs were able to take advantage of six errors from the Wilson Tobs to cruise to an easy 7-2 victory Friday night at The Swamp.
Things got going quickly for the SwampDogs in the first inning with second baseman Jason Blum working a lengthy at bat before singling off of Tob starter Tyler Watson. Blum advanced to second after centerfielder Adam Pate overthrew the cutoff man getting the ball back into the infield.
Two batters and one passed ball later, left fielder Norm Donkin dumped a changeup into right field to bring in Blum with the first run of the game.
SwampDog starter Cam Knott would surrender two runs in the top of the second, and the Tobs would take a 2-1, but it would not last for long.
In the bottom of the third, the SwampDogs would plate four runs to take the lead for good. The inning got started when centerfielder David LaFleur reached on an infield single. Blum and shortstop Kam Stewart then both reached on perfectly placed bunt singles to load the bases with nobody out.
Donkin then stepped up and battled Watson before dumping a single into right centerfield which would clear the bases. He would advance to second on another error by Pate.
After Donkin advanced to third on a groundout from catcher Lane Paul, he came into score on a sacrifice fly from right fielder Chase Edwards.
The SwampDogs would add insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings to stretch the score to 7-2, where it would stay.
On the hill Knott was dealing, as he would hand the SwampDogs their third quality start in the last four games. Knott went six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, walking two and striking out three.
Ryan Stinar, Nick Hartman and Deshorn Lake came on to pitch the final three innings and slam the door shut on the SwampDogs' third consecutive win. Lake struck out two batters in the ninth, touching 97 miles per hour with his fastball.
Knott was the winning pitcher, and his record improves to 1-1 on the season, Watson got the loss for the Tobs, falling to 2-1.
With the win the SwampDogs improve their record to 6-3 on the season moving one game ahead of the Tobs for second place in the Coastal Plain League East Division standings, 1.5 games behind the 7-1 Edenton Steamers for first.
The SwampDogs hit the road for the second half of the home-and-home series at Wilson tomorrow night, first pitch at 7:05 pm.
