
SwampDogs Strike out 14 Pilots in Loss

HAMPTON, Va. - The baseball Gods can be cruel sometimes. The SwampDogs hit the ball hard, but all too often a Pilot was in position to make the play. The pitchers struck out a combined 14 batters, but were plagued by bad luck as the SwampDogs dropped Thursday night's game to the Peninsula Pilots, 6-2.
Things were going well for the SwampDogs early as they jumped out to an early lead, scoring in the first inning after Jason Blum came around to score on a two out single from Lane Paul.
They plated another run in the fourth, when Alex Harris walked and stole second and came around to score when Brandon Metoyer reached on an error by Pilot shortstop Jason McMurray.
The middle innings would not be so kind to the SwampDogs, and the fifth inning was an especially rough one. Two Pilots reached on dropped third strikes and three infield hits led to five runs coming home.
The Pilots would tack on another run in the sixth, when they would take a 6-2 lead.
Nick Hartman was called upon to relieve Ricky Rivera in the midst of that inning and pitched 2.2 innings in long relief, striking out seven Pilots.
Teddy Turner danced around a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to hold the score there as the SwampDogs hoped for one last chance to come back.
Kam Stewart led off the ninth inning with a single to left, but he would be stranded at third. The SwampDogs would leave 11 men on base throughout the game.
Rivera was tagged with the loss for the SwampDogs, he falls to 1-1 on the season. He pitched the first 4.2 innings for the "ËDogs and was charged with four runs on nine hits, while striking out six and not walking a batter.
The winning pitcher was Blair Betts, who improves to 1-0.
