Wilmington Sharks News Release
All night Wilmington (2-2) struggled to keep the visiting Fayetteville SwampDogs (1-2) off the scoreboard. The SwampDogs scored runs in six different innings including three in both the third and eighth frames to beat Wilmington 10-7.
The defeat for the Sharks was its first at home, while the SwampDogs earned win number one of the summer.
Fayetteville opened the scoring with three straight hits in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead on the road. Wilmington answered in the bottom half of the second when Ward Coleman brought home the Sharks first run.
In the third, the visitors broke out for their first three run inning, including a two-run homer by Jay Hayes. Wilmington responded in the bottom of the inning, but with just one run after loading the bases with no outs.
In the top of the fourth, Fayetteville tacked on another run after a leadoff double by Matthias Carter. The Sharks responded again, but this time in a big way. Wilmington scored four runs on three hits and an error from the SwampDogs to take the lead. With the score tied at five, Kevon Perkins singled to bring home Ben Anderson to give the Sharks the 6-5 lead.
Again though, the game went back and fourth and the SwampDogs answered with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to retake the lead 7-6.
In the seventh, Wilmington answered the call again. With runners on the corners and one out, Danny Wondrack singled to right to tie the game once more at seven apiece.
It was the eighth inning though that would be the decisive frame. The SwampDogs loaded the bases against Eddie Hiott (1-1) with nobody out. The Charleston Southern southpaw then struck out Matt Kelly for the first out. The ensuing batter, Nate Monastra singled home two runs to take a 9-7 lead. Fayetteville went on to add one more run for a 10-7 lead.
The three run cushion was all Jared Lembcke (1-0) would need. The righty from North Greenville University recorded the final eight outs to secure the victory for the SwampDogs.
The Sharks and SwampDogs meet again tomorrow evening at the Swamp in Fayetteville. First pitch is set for 7:05.
The only available stream tomorrow will be the video stream on the Coast Plain League website. There will not be a Wilmington Sharks Radio Network broadcast.
