SwampDogs Fall Short After Rain Delay
July 29, 2013 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
After approximately an hour and twenty minute rain delay, the Wilmington Sharks (13-8, 27-21) held on to beat the Fayetteville SwampDogs (9-7, 26-17) 6-1 on the road.
The offense got started in the second inning when Zach Stephens (Tennessee Tech) and Tommy Houmard (UNC-Asheville) led the inning off with a walk and a single. After TJ Losby (Bowling Green St.) placed the sacrifice bunt down the first base line, Justin Weaver (Christopher Newport) and Michael Dunster (Clemson) would drive in the pair of runs to make it a 2-0 game.
In the top half of the fourth, Dunster hit his second RBI on a sacrifice fly to Brian Celsi (California) in center field to score Stephens for the second time of the night.
Dunster finished the night batting 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a run, a double, and a stolen base. Losby joined him going a perfect 3-for-3 as well with two runs scored.
The game was suspended for an hour and twenty minutes with two outs in the top of the fourth inning before play resumed. Fayetteville tried to make it interesting down by three when Stu Jones (Tennessee-Martin) came into the game.
The SwampDogs reached base with four consecutive batters and Derek Gibson (Southeast Missouri St.) drove in Ransom LaLonde (St. Edward's) for his 17th RBI of the year. Ryan Busch (Georgetown) and Chase Rader (Coffeyville Community College) would strike out to leave the bases loaded in a critical inning.
Losby and Dunster both scored in the sixth inning on a two-RBI single by Andrew Amaro (Maryland) to left field. Dunster put the runners on the second and third after hitting his third double of the season.
Losby scored his second run in the eighth inning to make it 6-1. Tyler Moore (Coffeyville Community College) tried to throw out Dunster stealing second to end the inning, but the throw back by LaLonde was off the mark and bounced off the backstop of J.P. Riddle Stadium.
Mark Biesma (Washburn) suffered his first loss of the season after allowing five runs (four earned) in his seven innings and Jack Van Horn (Wright State) closed out the final two innings with two hits, two strikeouts and a run allowed (unearned).
The SwampDogs and Sharks play a doubleheader tomorrow in Wilmington in a race for third place heading into the playoffs.
