Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release
Team USA Collegiate National Team came into Fayetteville and won their third straight game against a Coastal Plain League opponent, defeating the SwampDogs 11-3.
The Red, White and Blue wasted no time putting runs on the board to support their starting pitcher Brandon Finnegan (TCU). Second baseman Alex Bregman (LSU) got the offense started with an RBI double in the first inning to score Brad Zimmer (San Francisco).
Fayetteville's starting pitching Kevin Archbold (University at Albany) was relieved in the second inning after allowing four runs, only one of which was earned. Zimmer had a two RBI hit in the second inning to propel USA to a 4-0 lead after two full frames. Archbold did strike out USA's four-hole hitter Kyle Schwarber (Indiana) twice before he left the game.
Garrett Baugh (Tennessee Tech) threw a strong inning and a third of one hit, no run baseball.
The fourth and fifth innings lasted a while, however. USA padded their impressive lead with six runs in those two innings in which Schwarber had three RBIs and two runs and Matt Chapman (Cal State Fullerton) added two RBIs in that span.
Trea Turner (NC State) and Zimmer each stole two bags.
The SwampDogs won innings six through nine, outscoring Team USA 3-1. Fayetteville knocked Oregon starter Tommy Thorpe for two runs on four hits. Mitchell Kranson scored the run in the sixth off an error and Daniel Nevares (Binghamton) and Chad Whitehead (UNC-Pembroke) each hit an RBI single in the seventh.
Parker McDaniel (Emporia State) threw a perfect eighth inning with a strikeout. Also, Brian Celsi (California) had an inspirable night, collecting a game-high three hits and also a run.
Fayetteville has an off day tomorrow and they will take on the Columbia Blowfish on the road Wednesday night in an effort to close the gap on Edenton for first place in the East.
