
SwampBats Drop To .500 After Loss to Bay Sox

NEW BEDFORD, MA: The Keene SwampBats dropped to 2-2 on the 2018 season after a 7-3 loss to the New Bedford Bay Sox. New Bedford opened the scoring in the bottom of the 1st inning after an RBI double by the designated hitter Robert Emery. Keene first baseman Brandon Smith tied the game at 1-1 with an RBI double in the top of the 4th inning, scoring centerfielder Alex Carballo from second base.
In his first appearance of the season, Jake McLinskey (Georgia Southern), tonight's starting pitcher, went 5 innings giving up 1 run on four hits while striking out 6, starting out the year with a 1.80 earned run average. Keene's Erick Zecha (Rensselaer Polytech), the losing pitcher, pitched 3 innings in relief, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits. Bay Sox shortstop Jack Winkler had an RBI double bottom of the 7th inning to extend the lead to 3-1. Two sacrifice flies in that same inning made the score 5-1 Bay Sox. New Bedford's Tyler Zell, the winning pitcher, went 2 innings, giving up 2 runs, none of them earned, while striking out two.
Keene was able to get 2 runs back in the top 8th inning on one of three throwing errors by Bay Sox second baseman Anthony Raucci, scoring Mitchell Golden from third base and Jake Whitcomb from 2nd base, cutting the lead at the time to 5-3. Jack Winkler had another RBI double in the bottom of the 8th to extend the lead to 7-3.
