Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

RICHMOND, VA – The Charleston Swamp Foxes led from start to finish as they evened their record at .500, winning for only the third time in the past two years on the road, 52-29 over the Richmond Speed Saturday night in arenafootball2 action.

The Swamp Foxes (5-5) kept playoff hopes alive with the win, the teams second over the Speed in the past two seasons. Charleston's 52 points marked the fourth-consecutive, and fifth out of the past six games the offensive had reached the half century mark on the scoreboard.

But the story of the night had to be the improved play of the af2's top-rated defense for the Foxes. Charleston, who had surrendered 104 points in the last two math-ups, held the Speed to 29 points – the fewest allowed this season – and forced seven fumbles, losing five.

"We were ball hawkers tonight," said head coach Rik Richards. "We forced a lot of fumbles and got huge plays from a lot of people tonight. Richmond is a good team and they play tough, but we simply did what we came up here to do and that resulted in a win."

He added, "When you've got the top-rated defense and an offense that's putting 50 points on the scoreboard, I'm not saying we're unstoppable, but we've got something special. We got off to a slow start, but we're on a roll right now."

Quarterback Johnny Turman continued his recent hot streak, completing 20 of 38 passes for a team-record setting 325 yards, 201 of which coming in the first half, and five touchdowns.

Six different receivers caught passes for the offense with Leroy McFadden, who surpassed the 100-point barrier with his 12 points, leading the way. McFadden caught five passes for 87 yards and a pair of TDs. Joe Judge, who was injured on the final play of the game, equaled McFadden's receptions and added a score as well.

Mike Chandler hauled in four passes for 73 yards and two scores, with Antoine Calloway, in his first game back with the squad after a year absence, caught three passes for 57 yards.

Charleston led at halftime, 29-23, but opened up the second half stuffing a Richmond drive forcing a fumble as quarterback Joel Gordon fumbled on the one-yard line. The Foxes added two scores within the final minute of the third quarter – a nine-yard scoring strike from Turman to McFadden and a net recovery return by Marlon Moye-Moore on the ensuing kickoff – to push the Swamp Foxes ahead without further trouble.

The Swamp Foxes return home next Saturday night for a battle with the Macon Knights at the North Charleston Coliseum. The game is set for a special start time of 6:00 pm. Following the game, the Swamp Foxes are proud to welcome six-time Dove Award winner, Christian music recording artist Jaci Velasquez for a post-game concert.

Tickets start at $15 for individual tickets, special group rate of $10. For more information, contact the Swamp Foxes office at (843) 554-4321.
