Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – Charleston Swamp Foxes' wide receiver/defensive backs Hosea Laney and Joe Judge spent Tuesday afternoon helping with a "Charleston's Promise" event held at the Harleyville/Ridgeville Elementary School in Dorchester County.

The two players served as mentors in several classrooms, helping with assignments, reading stories, answering questions, and even playing with the students. The event also helped introduce another area of the South Carolina Lowcountry to the Charleston Swamp Foxes arenafootball2 team.

Charleston's Promise is the local version of America's Promise, a grass roots organization spearheaded by General Colin Powell. It is dedicated to mobilizing the nation's groups and organizations as well as businesses to build and strengthen the character and competence of America's young people.

The local venture addresses the issue of a safe place with structured activities through organizations that are already in place, such as after-school programs. It also uses local role models to reinforce the communities' commitment to the children. The one-on-one relationships formed through in-classroom activities such as this one are crucial.

The five promises in which Charleston's Promise is making to every child include: An ongoing relationship with a caring adult—parent, mentor, tutor or coach; a safe place to be with structured activities during non-school hours; a healthy start; a marketable skill through effective education; And, an opportunity to give back through community service.

ABC News 4, along with Giant Cement Company, hosted the event at Harleyville/Ridgeville Elementary. This is the second such event that the Swamp Foxes' have participated. A recap of the day's events was held on the 11:00 news broadcast on WCIV, ABC News 4.

The Swamp Foxes return to action this Saturday, May 3 when they travel to the Columbus Wardogs for a 7:30 pm kickoff. Charleston returns home in one week, hosting the Florida Firecats at the North Charleston Coliseum on May 10 at 7:30 pm.
