Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
FAYETTEVILLE, NC â Charleston's top-rated defense intercepted five Cape Fear passes, helping them to limit the af2's fifth rated scoring defense to six second half points as the Swamp Foxes knocked off the Wildcats 58-34 on the road Saturday night.
"This is the greatest victory in Swamp Foxes history tonight," said a jubilant Rik Richards following his teams' third road victory of the season. "We've never been 6-6 at this point of the season. We not only beat the best team in our division, but one of the best teams in the league."
He added, "We're for real. We've just have to play for 60 minutes with heart and hustle and we'll be there in the end."
Joe Judge, seeing his first action since the neck injury in the road win over Richmond, did it all in the win for the Foxes. He led the team with nine receptions for 85 yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Judge intercepted a pair of passes, including one in the end zone which he returned 26 yards.
On special teams, Judge returned two missed field goals for 56 yards and one kickoff for 18.
Leroy McFadden hauled in five passes for 48 yards and a score, rushing for another in the win. Antoine Calloway had three receptions for 33 yards including a 23-yard scoring strike, his first since returning to his former squad.
Quarterback Johnny Turman, who entered the night averaging just under 320 yards passing over his past three games, was limited to 192 yards passing on 20-of-35 with five touchdowns, which lock Turman in a tie with former Foxes signal caller, Ray Isaac for the single-season touchdown passing record.
Cape Fear struck first as the af2's leading rusher Wilmont Perry rumbled in from one-yard out. The Swamp Foxes answered three minutes later as Marlon Moye-Moore duplicated Perry's one-yard score, evening the game at seven apiece.
Trailing 14-7, the Foxes rattled off back-to-back scores to end the first and start the second quarters to take a 21-14 advantage before the âCats equaled the score at 21 midway through the half.
Charleston added a 22-yard Rob Bironas field goal late in the half, but the Cape Fear Wildcats took a four-point, 28-24 lead into the locker room.
The Foxes defense stiffened in the second stanza with the only âCat points coming on a nine-yard strike from Bryan Snyder to Anthony Hines at the 4:02 mark of the third quarter. Charleston outscored Cape Fear 27-0 over the final 19:02 to secure the victory.
The Swamp Foxes return home next Saturday night, July 5, for a rematch with the Greensboro Prowlers at the North Charleston Coliseum. In honor of the birthday of Sly Fox, the Swamp Foxes loveable mascot, children 12 and under will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Kickoff next Saturday is set for 7:30 pm, with pre-game festivities starting at 5:00 pm. The Swamp Fox tailgate zone, featuring live music from the "Brent Lundy Band," face painting, balloons, and the return of jump castles starts in Parking Lot A at 5:00 pm on game day.
