Keene Swamp Bats News Release
Brian Hunter threw a gem and the Keene offense did just enough to give the Swamp Bats a 3-1 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers.
Keene again got off to a hot start with the bats. The NECBL Player of the Week, JP Sportman, hit is third home run of the season and his second in as many nights to give Keene an early two run advantage. Sportman, out of Central Connecticut State University, is leading the league with a .391 batting average.
The Mountaineers scored their only run off of Brian Hunter (1-1), who made the start for the Swamp Bats, in the top of the third inning on an error. The right-hander out of Hartford University went six strong innings, only giving up one unearned run on just three hits and five walks. Hunter also struck out five along the way.
The Swamp Bats scored again in the bottom of the sixth on a Jon Scott, Bryant University, RBI single which drove in Hartford's Ryan Lukach to push the lead to 3-1.
The score would remain the same the rest of the way as Paul Covelle, Matthew Clancy, and Dustin Cook worked scoreless innings of relief the rest of the way. Cook picked up his second save of the season in his two innings of work.
The Swamp Bats' winning streak has now hit six games, seeing them improve their record to 11-12. After compiling a 3-11 record in the month of June, the Swamp Bats are now 8-1 to start July.
Keene will hit the road for their next two contests, both at North Adams on Saturday and Sunday evening.
