
Swamp Bats' Season Comes to End with Heartbreaking Loss in Extras

The Keene Swamp Bats saw their season come to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Wednesday night, falling 4-3 at the hands of the Sanford Mainers in Game 3 of the Northern Division Semifinal at Goodall Park.
Sanford advances to play Vermont in the Northern Division final beginning tomorrow night.
Sam Dexter (Southern Maine) delivered the RBI walk-off single with one out in the bottom of the 10th to score Sam Balzano (Maine) and propel the Mainers into the Northern Division final.
Ben Criscuolo (Southern NH) was charged with the loss for Keene, working 2.1 innings and allowing one run on two hits with one walk.
Keene took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fifth as Brady Sheetz (Hartford) plated Stephen Smith (Texas Tech) with a two-out RBI single. On the same play, Sheetz advanced to second on a throwing error by Mainers shortstop Nick Lovullo (Holy Cross) that allowed Taylor Perez (St. Leo) to come home for the Swamp Bats.
Bret Dennis (St. John's) drove in Keene's final run of the night with an RBI double in the top of the sixth, making the score 3-0 Swamp Bats.
Balzano led off the home half of the sixth for Sanford with an infield single, advanced to second on a throwing error by Perez and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch charged to Keene reliever Matt Clancy (St. John's).
The Mainers tied the game in the bottom half of the seventh on a two-out, two run single from Kevin Stypulkowski (Maine) that scored Corey Raley (Texas Tech) and Dan Hetzel (Rhode Island). Raley had reached with a single and Hetzel had walked.
Swamp Bats starter Alec Bettinger (Virginia) went the first 5.1 innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, with one walk and six strikeouts.
