Keene Swamp Bats News Release

Game One of the Western Division Finals went down to the wire on Wednesday night, but it was the Keene Swamp Bats who came out victorious, to defeat the Vermont Mountaineers 4-2.

Eric Gutierrez had a big RBI single in the eighth inning to push the across the winning run.

After a scoreless first two inning, it was Vermont who scored first in this one on a Thomas Roulis RBI single.

Early on though, it was a pitching duel between the two Western Division rivals starters.

Brian Hunter, out of Hartford, went five-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits and four walks with six strikeouts.

Keene roared back with two runs of their own in the fourth inning. Zach Lauricella, St. Johns', hit an RBI single to score the first run, and after an Eric Gutierrez single, Tommy Monnot scored on a throwing error.

Vermont tied the game in the top of the sixth on a Keene error, and the game stayed like that until the bottom of the eighth.

Gutierrez's clutch single drove in the first run, and Keene scored again on a costly throwing error from the Mountaineers.

Matthew Clancy and James Connell threw four scoreless innings of relief, to seal the 4-2 win. Clancy got his seventh win of the summer on the night, as well as Connell earning his 10th save. Both pitchers lead the league in their respective pitching categories.

The victory gives the Swamp Bats a big 1-0 edge in this Western Division Finals Series. Game Two will be in Montpelier, VT on Thursday night. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
