Keene Swamp Bats News Release
KEENE, N.H. - After giving up a 2-0 lead, the Keene Swamp Bats were able to hang onto a 3-2 victory over the Vermont Mountaineers at Alumni Field.
The Swamp Bats retook the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning when Vermont reliever Cameron Sorgie (Albany) threw a wild pitch allowing Connor Fitzsimons (Central Connecticut State) to score the go-ahead and eventual winning run.
Vermont had the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the top of the ninth with one out, but Matt Clancy (St. John's) shut the door on the Mountaineer comeback striking out pinch-hitter Adam Picard (UMass) and Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) to end the ball game.
"I just knew that I had to make pitches and that as long as I made my pitches I knew we were going to get out of it somehow," Clancy said.
The Swamp Bats improve to 9-10 with the win, while the North Division leading Mountaineers fall to 12-7 with the loss.
The Swamp Bats started the scoring in the fourth inning when Zach Lauricella (St. John's) led off the inning with a double. Ryan Summers (Louisville) then reached on a fielder's choice when the Vermont shortstop Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) tried to get Lauricella out at third but was unsuccessful. After Summers stole second, Alex Liqouri (Kennesaw State) hit a broken bat single to left plating both Lauricella and Summers.
Vermont got on the board in the top of the seventh inning when Blake Tiberi (Louisville) hit a towering lead-off home run to straight away center field, his first of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1 Swamp Bats.
That would be it for Keene starter Dominic Severino (Central Connecticut State) who went a solid seven innings giving up one run on the home run, on four hits, allowed one walk and struck out three on 85 pitches. He ended up with a no-decision.
Vermont starter Daniel Koger (Alabama Huntsville) went six solid innings giving up two runs, both earned on four hits, walking two and striking out one.
University of Virginia product, Jack Roberts made his first appearance for the Swamp Bats this season. Coming off of an injury, Roberts struggled giving up one run on two hits in two-thirds of an innings pitched, but did pick up two strikeouts.
The Mountaineers tied it up in the top of the eighth inning when Chandler Brock (Alabama Huntsville) singled to right field scoring Parenty who pinch-hit for catcher Josh Treff (Northeastern).
The Swamp Bats go on the road again tomorrow as they travel to Plymouth to take on the South Division leading Pilgrims at 6:30 pm.
