Swamp Bats end skid, defeat North Adams 5-2

Keene, N.H - The Swamp Bats ended their two game losing streak Wednesday night, defeating the North Adams Steeplecats 5-2. Two hits were all that the Swamp Bats needed, highlighted by a five run bottom of the third.
Artie Lewicki (University of Virginia) started the game for Keene, going up against Tyler Badamo (Dowling College) for North Adams.
The Steeplecats got the scoring started in the top of the first after Lewicki walked the first two batters of the game. After leading off with a walk, Jeff Roy (University of Rhode Island) stole second base, his 17th of the year. With Sheehan Planas-Arteaga (Barry University) on first base, Roy stole third and scored when Keene catcher Cameron O'Brien (Univeristy of Louisville) overthrew third base.
North Adams added another run in the top of the third when Roy, who walked for the second time, scored from second on a single from Bryan Soloman (Eastern Kentucky). That concluded the scoring for North Adams on the night.
Keene answered North Adams immediately with their only scoring inning of the night. Badamo, who cruised through the first two innings of the game, struggled to find the strike zone in the third. He hit Brett Barrett (Southern Maine University) to start the inning. That was followed by a walk of Dylan Moore (Cypress Community College). With one out, Badamo walked Austin Wheeler (University of Georgia) to load the bases. Grant Kay (Iowa Western CC) then worked an 11 pitch walk to score the first run of the game.
With the bases still loaded, Dylan Delacruz (Central Connecticut St. University) grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring Moore from third and leaving runners on the corners with two outs. That set the table for Jared Walsh (University of Georgia), one of the hottest hitters in the lineup for Keene. Walsh continued his strong play, knocking a three-run homer over the left-centerfield wall, his second of the year. That gave the Swamp Bats the 5-2 lead and chased Badamo from the game.
From that point, the story of the game on both sides was pitching.
Lewicki calmed down considerably on the mound and finished the game with a strong line. He threw six innings, giving up only two runs (one earned) on three hits with seven strikeouts. It was Lewicki's best performance of the season.
The Steeplecats bullpen, led by Adam Sargent (University of Miami) and Christian MacDonald (UNC Wilmington), held the Swamp Bats hitless over the last six innings pitched. Unfortunately for North Adams, the Swamp Bats "Ëpen was equally impressive.
Ryan Horstman (St. John's University) and Kyle Gehrs (Iowa Western CC) kept the Steeplecats off the board for the final three innings of the game. Horstman threw two scoreless, highlighted by getting out of a two-runners-in-scoring-position and no out situation in the eighth. Gehrs came on first his third save attempt of the year, and despite giving up a one-out walk, kept North Adams off the board.
Gehrs is now 3-3 on save chances this year for the Swamp Bats. The win for Lewicki is his first of the season.
With the win, the Swamp Bats improve to 10-4 on the year, as North Adams falls to 10-6.
Both teams face-off again Thursday night for the second of a two-game series at Alumni Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30pm.
