Keene Swamp Bats News Release

Game One of the NECBL Championship Series was a one-sided affair, as the Newport Gulls were firing on all cylinders on Sunday night, defeating the Keene Swamp Bats 6-0.

Keene's red-hot offense was stifled in Game One, as Newport's Brett Graves was dynamite. The Gull's starter limited Keene to just four hits and one walk through his seven-shutout inning, taking on 10 strikeouts along the way.

Keene's starter Nick Kozlowski ran into trouble in his second postseason start.

The right-hander out of Hofstra lasted five innings, surrendering five runs on nine hits and two walks with five strikeouts along the way.

Newport jumped out in front of Game One with two runs in the second inning. The Gulls scored on a Shea Donlin RBI single and a wild pitch.

The Gulls again scored two more runs, this time in the fifth. An RBI single from Brian Roberts and a RBI double from Timmy Robinson extended Newport's lead to 4-0.

A big solo home run in the sixth inning off of Ethan Ferreira's bat gave Newport a 5-0 lead, and ended the night for Kozlowski.

John Birkbeck, out of Kent State, came on in relief for Keene's starter and looked good through his first two innings of work but ran into trouble in the ninth. After Birkbeck loaded the bases with nobody out in the eighth, Keene called on Joe McCarthy.

McCarthy got a double play, which scored Newport's sixth run, but got of the inning with no further damaged induced.

Keene failed to score in the ninth, as Newport's pitching staff completed the shutout, claiming Game One of the Championship Series.

The loss puts Keene in a 1-0 hole in the series, as they will fight for their lives on Monday night in Game Two at Alumni Field. First pitch is set 6:30 p.m.
