Surge win over Louisiana

March 9, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Mississippi Surge News Release

Four different goal scorers and another overall solid defensive effort lifted the Mississippi Surge to a 4-2 win at Louisiana over the IceGators Friday night. The win is the Surge's sixth triumph in the last seven games.

After Tyler Fernandez put Louisiana on top at 8:08 of the first period, the Surge reeled off four straight goals. Rob Campbell knotted the game for the Surge at 15:24 of the first period. Mississippi took the lead on second period goals by Shawn Skelly and Jeff Grant. Tyler Ruel stretched the lead to 4-1 two and a half minutes into the third period. Eric Tallent's power play goal for Louisiana, with eight and a half minutes left, rounded out the scoring.

The Surge held Louisiana to 25 shots on goal, just one night after giving up only 12 shots on goal in a 4-1 win over Fayetteville Thursday night. The win keeps the Surge one point behind Pensacola in the race for fourth place (and home ice advantage in the first round of the SPHL playoffs).

Mississippi has five games remaining in the regular season, with four of those being home games. The Surge will begin a three game homestand Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against the Augusta RiverHawks.
