December 27, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Mississippi Surge News Release
So Long 2011:The Mississippi Surge plays its final home game of 2011 tonight hosting the Augusta RiverHawks.
Records: The Surge is 8-11-1 for 17 points in seventh place.
Augusta is 18-4-1 for 37 points in first place.
Season Series:This is the fourth of six meetings between the two teams this season. Augusta has won all three games, 4-2 to open the season on October 20th; and then a pair of 5-2 decisions on November 26th, and December 2nd. In all three games, Augusta has scored an empty net goal, as the Surge had the goalie pulled in favor of an extra attacker.
Recent Action: The Surge dropped a 4-2 decision at Louisiana last night. It was the second straight game the Surge has lost in regulation time and extended the team winless streak to five games. Augusta is also coming off a defeat, having lost 5-3 at Knoxville last Thursday. That loss put an end to a seven game winning streak for Augusta.
Case For The Defense: Both Surge goals last night came on the power play and both came from defensemen. James Isaacs got the Surge on the scoreboard with his fourth goal of the season. Rookie Matt Ridley got his first professional goal to tie the game on a power play at 7:45 of the second period.
Noah's Team: Like animals on an ark, last night stretched the Surge's streak of scoring at least two goals a game to 20 games. They are the only team in the SPHL to have at least two goals in every game it has played this year.
Short Stuff:The Surge is the only team in the SPHL to have yet scored a shorthanded goal. However, the Surge has also yielded only one shorthanded goal against, the lowest in the league. Augusta has scored a league high six shorthanded goals, and has surrendered two shorthanded goals against.
Next Up: The Surge is playing the second game of a stretch that sees them playing eight games in 13 days. After tonight Mississippi hits the road for four straight games. There will be two straight games at Pensacola this Friday and Saturday. The next home game for the Surge will be Friday January 6 against the Knoxville Ice Bears. Augusta plays at Knoxville on Thursday.
