RiverHawks Downed by Surge 5-2

December 27, 2011 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release

For the first time all season long the Augusta RiverHawks have lost two games in a row, falling Tuesday night to the Mississippi Surge 5-2 in Biloxi. The loss gives the RiverHawks a tenuous hold on first place in the SPHL, just one point ahead of the Knoxville Ice Bears while having played two more games.

The RiverHawks dug themselves a hole they could not crawl out of early in the first period by allowing two goals in the first five minutes. Adam Stuart and Nick Guran scored in the first frame for the Surge.

The RiverHawks would shut the door for the remainder of the first period and steal back the momentum in the second, as forward Neil Graham scored a power play goal for the RiverHawks just under eight minutes in. RiverHawks' captain Matt Auffrey picked up an assist on the goal, extending his scoring streak to 13 games. He has scored 23 points over that span of games.

The Surge would hold on to the one-goal lead into the third period where they would explode to blow the game open. The Surge scored three goals in the first six minutes and five seconds to secure the victory. Guran scored his second just over a minute into the period, a goal that would become the eventual game winning goal. Former RiverHawks forward Chris Campanale would add an insurance marker a few minutes later, while Shawn Skelley would complete the Surge scoring with his seventh goal of the season

The RiverHawks would attempt to spark a comeback mid-way through the third period when Jim Gehring would score a goal set up by defenseman Curtis Megginson. Gehring's goals was his 23rd of the season, extending his league-lead in that category, but it would not be enough to get his club going as it would be the last goal of the game.

The loss is recorded as RiverHawks' goaltenders Peter Skoggard's first regular season defeat of his SPHL career. Previously this season he recorded three victories before having to return to his native Sweden to clear up immigration issues.

The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, December 30th as they play the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:35pm. Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office. Additional information on the Team, tickets, and schedule are available on the RiverHawks' home on the web, www.augustariverhawks.com or by calling 706-993-2645.
