San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release
San Diego scored in four out of the first five innings bolting to a 10-0 lead as Jake Meyer picked up his second win of the season and San Diego hung on for a 10-7 victory. The Surf Dawgs were given a good scare in the ninth when the tying run came to the plate but Josh Rummonds came in and closed it out. With the Chico Outlaws having the night off, the victory pulls the Surf Dawgs even with the Outlaws atop the Golden League standings.
The Surf Dawgs wouldn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard. After Matt Maloney and Tony Garcia were retired, Adam Mandel walked, Scott Goodman singled, and then Nick Guerra walked to load the bases. Joey Huskins, who went 2-for-3 with three RBI, stepped to the plate and singled in Mandel and Goodman to gain the early 2-0 lead. Ryan Fox then singled in Guerra and just like that it was 3-0.
Meyer (2-2) would hold Fullerton to just one hit through five innings but the Surf Dawgs had more than just one. They scored one in the third and then in the fourth Kevin Ciarrachi and Matt Maloney hit back-to-back home runs. Through four, it was 6-0 Surf Dawgs.
They weren't done yet because in the bottom of the fifth they added on four more, two of them on an Adam Mandel double, and heading into the sixth it was 10-0.
Fullerton would give the fans at Tony Gwynn Stadium a little scare in the sixth when they chased starting pitcher Jake Meyer by scoring five runs on seven hits. Brent Pourciau was called upon to stop the onslaught and he did just that.
Pourciau would pitch in the seventh and eighth but run into trouble in the ninth. Matt Ferrara flew out to right to start the inning. Then Toshi Sasa walked and Gabe Mayorga doubled and suddenly there were two on with one out. Garry Templeton II walked to load the bases and then Brett LeVier singled in two runs to pull Fullerton to within three and the tying run stepping to the plate.
Manager Terry Kennedy wasted no time in calling in his closer Josh Rummonds. Rummonds got Adam Shorsher and Jesse Schmidt to fly out to center field to end the game. With the save, Rummonds is now tied for the league lead in saves with Reno's Scott Schneider with 10 saves.
San Diego and Fullerton will now move to Fullerton for a three-game series to begin on Tuesday at Goodwin Field. Steve Smyth (2-1) will take the mound in search of his third victory for San Diego with the first pitch coming at 7:05 p.m. PT.
