Surf Dawgs Fall to Silver Sox

July 15, 2006 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

After playing a very close series with the Chico Outlaws, the San Diego Surf Dawgs headed to Reno looking to start the second half of the season on a winning note. Starting pitcher Steve Smyth (2-1) went eight innings for the Surf Dawgs but they ended up losing 6-1 in front of 2,367 fans at Peccole Park.

Once again the Surf Dawgs got out to an early 1-0 lead, but unfortunately for San Diego it would be their only run. In the first inning, Adam Mandel doubled to start the game but wouldn't score until Scott Goodman came up two outs and three batters later to drive him in with a single.

Reno tied the game in the bottom of the second when Edgar Varela doubled to lead off the inning. After Doug Gredvig struck out swinging, James Shanks hit a double that drove in Varela to tie it.

Smyth would keep the Silver Sox in check until the fourth inning when they plated two more runs to take the lead for good. With one out, Smyth walked Gredvig and then gave up a single to Shanks to put two on with one out. Jason Dewey followed with a double that plated Gredvig and it was 2-1 Reno. Phil Grau grounded out but scoring on the play was Shanks. After four the Silver Sox led 3-1.

The Sox would tack on one more in the fifth and two in the eighth to seal the victory. Jeremy McCann went 1-for-3 tonight for the Surf Dawgs and has had a hit in each of his first four games at the professional level.

The Surf Dawgs (16-25) will look to even the series tomorrow when Chris George (0-5) takes the hill in search of his first victory of 2006. Ben Thurmond (4-1) will throw for the Silver Sox (26-15) with the first pitch coming at 6:35 p.m. PT.
