San Diego Surf Dawgs News Release

The San Diego Surf Dawgs have now lost four in a row and have fallen to 6-6 in the second half after starting off 6-2. Jose Canseco hit his third home run of the season for Long Beach to help them defeat the Surf Dawgs 6-2 at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Nathan Pudewell (2-4) picked up his second win of the season for Long Beach while Jake Meyer (2-3) took the loss for San Diego.

Last week's GBL Player of the Week Adam Mandel was 4-for-5 tonight with a double and an RBI. Tony Garcia also had a good night at the dish, going 3-for-4 with two singles and a double.

Meyer cruised through inning number one and then challenged Jose Canseco in the top of the second to start the inning. Canseco made him pay and planted the Meyer pitch behind the wall in left-center field to give the Armada an early 1-0 lead.

Pudewell would hold the Surf Dawgs hitters in check all night, allowing seven hits in seven innings of work. Meyer would keep the Armada in line until the fifth inning when the long ball once again bit him, this time by catcher Michael DiRosa. DiRosa led off the inning with a solo shot to make it 2-0. Bobby Castro followed with a walk and after Jason Collette flew out, Ryan Stevenson singled to right field. The Armada went on to post three more in the inning to open up a five run lead.

San Diego did have their chances to score throughout the game, leaving a total of 12 men on base. They had the bases loaded in the third inning with less than two outs but failed to cash in. Seth Pietsch, who was 2-for-5, hit a double in the seventh with one out to get things going. After Nick Guerra flew out, Mandel followed up with a double to score Pietsch and it was 5-1. The Dawgs would score one more in the eighth to cut the lead to three but Long Beach once again added a run in the ninth to make it a four-run lead.

In the bottom of the ninth Pietsch led off with a single and moved to second during Guerra's at bat. Mandel then singled to put runners at the corners with only one out and Scott Goodman at the plate. Chris Testa would be brought in to shut it down and that he did, picking up his first save of 2006. Goodman struck out and Joey Huskins grounded out to first to end the game.

Cuban hurler Yoankis Turino will make his first American start tomorrow when he takes the mound against the Armada (6-7). Long Beach will counter with Rik Currier (0-2) with the first pitch at 5:05 p.m. PT.
