Daytona Beach Thunder News Release
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, FL - Marine Corps colors and a unique wrap-around decal featuring the Daytona Beach Thunder's unique logo will rumble across Daytona Beach and all of Volusia county soon.
Using their Super Bowl party as a backdrop, owners Kevin and Zack McDonald unveiled the Thunder's official game helmet and jersey Sunday, February 5, 2006 at Zack McDonald's bayside residence.
With kickoff fast approaching, the McDonalds and head coach Ervin Bryson first presented the black helmet with the Thunder "monster" springing from the front and his arms fully extended to the sides. With bright bolts of lightning coming from each hand and a fierce look on his face, the Thunder monster and the team are not to be taken lightly.
Kevin McDonald called the character "Thunder personified." Bryson said it's the "sharpest helmet he's seen in his indoor football career." "The character looks sort of like a mean cloud," said defensive end/linebacker Myqual Spann. "I like it because it's fierce."
Following the helmet presentation was the debut of the official game jersey, worn by the brothers and featuring the team colors -- black, scarlet and gold. Zack McDonald chose the colors of his beloved United States Marine Corps, in which he served his country four years.
"These colors run true and strong," Zack McDonald said. "I'm proud that our football team will also wear those colors."
Kevin McDonald wore "20" and Zack McDonald "06" to symbolize the Thunder's inaugural 2006 season. "One without the other and it doesn't work," Kevin McDonald said. "It shows how well we work together as a team and how the community is coming together to support our organization."
Joining the Thunder players, coaches and dancers were over 100 sponsors and friends to watch the Pittsburgh Steelers' 21-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks projected on two giant screens on the McDonalds' house. Catering by Red Tail Bar and Grill, fresh oysters and a mammoth halftime fireworks show by Master Displays Images highlighted the day's event.
Players began reporting over the weekend for training camp, which starts Wednesday.
"We are a champion team with champion owners and championship coaches in a champion city," Bryson told guests at the party while cheering for his beloved Steelers. "We are going to win the championship game." The Thunder opens its inaugural American Indoor Football Season Feb. 26 at the Valley Vipers.
