SOUTH DAYTONA, Fla. - Building a successful team on and off the field has been the Daytona Beach Thunder's main goal for its inaugural 2006 American Indoor Football League.
That thought was re-emphasized Monday, February 6, during the team's media luncheon at Whistle Stop Junction Buffet.
Flanked by five players each expected to play a key role this season, owner Zack McDonald and Head Coach Ervin Bryson laid the groundwork for what has been accomplished and what is expected when the Thunder kicks off Feb. 26.
"In building a team you look for character...and leaders" Bryson explained.
When he was scouting for players he listed intelligence and leadership as some of his desirable qualities of his players. He also informed the approximately 15 members of the media present of his game plan for the player in preparation for the "next level" by building relationships with National Football League and Arena Football League scouts and coaches.
McDonald stressed a player-centered approach and desire to set the standard.
"We are striving for excellence, we are doing all we can to keep the players in an environment that fosters a championship," McDonald said.
The five players who met the media Monday were wide receiver Robert Baily, Wide defensive lineman Myqual Spann, linebacker Rashaan Kearney, defensive back Nick Allison, and Travis Wilson, who enters Wednesday's opening of training camp as the starting quarterback.
"With a new team is a new life," said Spann. "We have a new standard to set and we have the talent it takes to go all the way."
"We hope to bring home the victory," added Bailey.
In addition to leading the team on the field, Wilson expressed his goals for getting involved with the community.
"We want to speak to students, work with the youth groups," Wilson said. "We're going to give you [the media] a lot of positive things to write about."
Kearney, a member of last year's Daytona Beach NIFL franchise, emphasized the caring nature of the owners and the productivity on and off the field that should result from it.
Allison elected not to speak to group, saying afterwards he'll wait "until he has something to talk about."
