Pittsfield Suns News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA (August 6, 2014) -Brandon Geary's walk off RBI-single in the ninth inning helped to push Pittsfield over Wachusett Wednesday night at Wahconah Park, beating the Dirt Dawgs 5-4 in a much needed win for the Suns.
The Suns looked promising early, plating a run in the first inning. Gary Tesch led off the game with a single and would later score from third after a single from Steve Dill and sacrifice hit by Tyler Bell, giving the Suns a 1-0 advantage.
The bats went cold after that, as Pittsfield would only manage one hit the next six innings and the Dirt Dawgs took advantage. Wachusett would plate four runs in that span, hitting a three-run homerun in fifth off the bat of Evan Brown and a solo shot from Sam Goodwin-Boyd in the seventh to give them the 4-1 lead.
Pittsifled battled back and cut the lead in the eighth. A pair of walks and single by Geary loaded the bases for Derek Gardella who hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the Suns first run of the frame. The second run came on a wild pitch by Ryan Venditti, to make it 4-3.
The Suns weren't done yet, and would return in the ninth inning with a score to settle. Two errors by Dirt Dawgs third basemen, Mattingly Romanin and an intentional walk to Tyler Bell loaded the bases for Jeff McGarry who would slap a ground ball to the shortstop, but plated Tesch to even the score. With a runner on third and two outs Geary stepped to the plate. With three balls and one strike, he would smack an RBI single over the shortstop's head, scoring the run and giving Pittsfield a 5-4 victory.
Alex Lagos would earn his first win of the season, after coming on in the ninth in relief. Lagos would pitch one inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Ben White would record his first loss of the year after going two - thirds of an inning, relinquishing one hit and two runs in the ninth.
The Suns continue their last three-game homestand tomorrow night at Wahconah.
