Suns swept in Carolina

ZEBULON, N.C. – A six-run eighth inning negaited a Suns lead in a 7-2 loss to the Carolina Mudcats in front of 1,979 fans Tuesday at Five County Stadium.

After Suns starter allowed one unearned run over seven innings, manager Dino Ebel turned the game over to the bullpen to hold their 2-1 lead. Luis Pineda, making his first appearance after offseason shoulder surgery, allowed a game-tying double to Chris Aguila with one out. Pineda (0-1) was dealt the loss when reliever Jason Frasor allowed a two-run, bases loaded single to Chris Ashby, scoring two inherited runners put on base by Pineda.

The Suns' bullpen has allowed 24 earned runs in 23 innings over the last 10 games. The Suns (49-58 overall, 18-20 second half) have lost five consecutive games after being swept by the Mudcats. Jacksonville has lost eight of nine games and 10 of its last 13. The Suns conclude the road trip at 1-7.

Totten earned a no-decision despite walking none and scattering four hits. He has allowed eight earned runs and two walks in 52.1 innings over his last seven starts.

In the fourth inning off Mudcats starter Nic Ungs, the Suns scored first when Rodney Van Buizen singled on the next pitch after Shane Victorino tripled. Victorino went 3-for-3.

The Mudcats (62-42, 20-16) tied the score in the fifth inning. Suns first baseman Derek Michaelis bumbled a ground ball allowing Ungs to reach with two outs. Billy Hall tripled Ungs home, making the score, 1-1.

The Suns retook the lead when Reggie Abercrombie singled in Totten with two outs in the sixth inning.

Jose Cueto (5-2) earned the win in relief for Carolina.

After a league-wide off-day Wednesday, the Suns will host the Chattanooga Lookouts in a four-game homestand at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Right-hander Joel Hanrahan (9-4, 2.37 ERA) will defend his league-leading earned run average against the Lookouts and righty Daylan Childress (0-3, 5.40) at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
