Pittsfield Suns News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA (July 29, 2015) - The Pittsfield Suns loss 12-9 to the Seacoast Mavericks, Wednesday night at Wahconah Park. An early 5-0 lead by the Mavericks was just too much for the Suns to overcome, despite scoring nine runs themselves.
Seacoast jumped out to a very fast start, putting five runs up on the board in the first inning before Pittsfield was even able to swing a bat. The Mavericks led off the inning with two back-to-back singles by Matt McCoomb and Keith Oren. An error by Suns left fielder, Derek Bauer allowed batter Michael Purcell to reach first and a run to score. Next up was Ryan Gendron who reached base on a walk and Evan Brown who slapped a single to plate both Oren and Purcell. Gendron would score from third after a sacrifice fly from Matt Mayo to bring the inning's final tally to 5-0.
The Mavericks would put an additional two runs on the board in the third inning, before the Suns could plate their first run in the fourth. Dan Palazzo earned a one-out walk, before a wild pitch and a single by Brendan Geary put runners on the corners for Matt Morales who hit a pop fly to right to score Pittsfield's first run. Two walks later, the bases were loaded for Jeremy Giles who was patient and was issued a walk to give the Suns two runs. Finally Tyler Lyne was hit by a pitch, allowing the third and final run of the frame to make the score 7-3.
Seacoast was able to put up an additional five runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by a solo homerun off the bat of Ryan Gendron to increase their lead to 12-3. Pittsfield was able to get a couple of those runs back, scoring four in the fifth and two in the sixth, but it just wasn't enough for the hometown team who fell 12-9.
Mark Cummingham would earnt the win for the Macericks after coming into the game in seventh inning. Cunningham threw 2.2 innings, giving up one hit, one walk and striking out three. Suns starter River Carbone was charged with the loss.
The Suns are back in action at Wahconah Park Thursday, July 30th when they take on the Martha's Vineyard Sharks at 7:00 PM. For tickets please call (413)445-SUNS or visit pittsfieldsuns.com.
