Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns in conjunction with the Washington Nationals are pleased to announce their 2007 Opening Day roster. The Suns will begin the new season on Thursday, April 5th with new manager Tommy Herr set to lead several of the Nationals' top young prospects.
The Suns roster is comprised of 12 pitchers and 13 position players. This year's Hagerstown Suns roster has two of the top ten players in the Nationals organization as ranked by Baseball America. Outfielder Chris Marrero, the #2 rated prospect, batted .309 with 16 RBI in 22 games in 2006 for the GCL Nationals. Marrero was also rated by Baseball America as the No. 1 prospect among high school position players entering the season. Joining Marrero on the Hagerstown Suns is the Nationals #9 rated prospect Stephen King. King, selected in the 3rd round in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft in 2006 will make his professional debut after garnering First-Team All-Central Florida honors and All-Metro Conference accolades his senior season. He hit .355 with 5 homers and 23 steals with Winter Park High.
Other notable players include Justin Maxwell, a fourth round draft pick in 2005; Maxwell hit .321 in short-season Vermont last year. Maxwell enters the '07 campaign as the fastest base runner and best athlete among Washington prospects according to Baseball America's Annual Best Tools Survey. RHP Johnny Nunez joins the Suns after he nearly won the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League pitching Triple Crown last summer; the Nationals acquired him in an August trade for the Dodgers' Marlon Anderson. The Suns catching core will include former 2004 second round draft pick Erik San Pedro. In 2006, San Pedro played for the following Nationals' short-season, A and AAA teams: the Vermont Lake Monsters, Savannah Sand Gnats and New Orleans Zephyrs, respectively. In 2006 he was recognized by Baseball America's Annual Tools Survey as the best defensive catcher in the Nationals' system.
