Crawdads Beat LR Bears in Exhibition Bout

Hickory, NC--The Hickory Crawdads beat Lenoir Rhyne College, 10-2, in Tuesday's exhibition game at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Stellar pitching was the key for both clubs early. Crawdads starter Michael Crotta limited the Bears to just a pair of hits over 3 scoreless innings of work. Meanwhile, L.R. starting LHP Greg Conrad pitched two shutout frames for the Bears.

Offense returned from winter hibernation for the Dads' in the 4th. After a walk drawn by Jamie Romak, Jim Negrych smacked an RBI double to the wall in left, putting Hickory up 1-0. That sparked a 6-run scoring spree in the inning highlighted by 2-run singles socked to right by Kristopher Watts and Angel Gonzalez. Hickory tallied 3 more runs in the 5th. Francis Poni nailed a 2-run double to the gap in right-center, scoring Kent Sakamoto and Eddie Prasch. Alex Presley capped off the scoring for the Dads in the 7th with a solo homerun blasted to right.

The Bears got on the board their final time up with 2 runs in the 9th on RBI doubles swatted by Jonathan Robbins and Daniel Smith. Olivo Astacio slammed the door shut on any and all comeback attempts on the mound in the 9th. Astacio held on for a win, earned by Yoffri Martinez. Adam Hart took the loss for the Bears.

The Crawdads open up the regular season Thursday in Hagerstown, Md. Jared Hughes toes the rubber for Hickory. Coverage begins at 6:20 on the radio on 92.1 FM "The Big Dog" and hickorycrawdads.com. First pitch is slated for 6:35.
