Suns Rally Past 'Claws

HAGERSTOWN, MD-A friendly bounce on a Leonard Davis triple keyed a two-run 8th inning for Hagerstown, who rallied to beat Lakewood 4-3 on Monday night.
With Michael Dubee in his 2nd inning of relief, Marcos Cabral picked up a lead-off single and scored the tying run when a Leonard Davis base-hit hopped over the head of Quintin Berry in center and rolled to the wall. Robert Jacobsen would bring in Davis to complete the rally.
The Hagerstown (3-8) win is their 3rd straight to open this series after they opened the 2nd half at 0-8. Lakewood (7-4) continues to struggle offensively, as the two runs on this night bring their 13-game tally to just 34 runs scored.
Chris Lugo (1-2), who retired the three he faced in the 8th to qualify for the win, did the same in the 9th to seal it. Dubee (3-4) suffered the loss.
Lakewood got to play the game from in front, with Quintin Berry scoring in the first inning on a passed ball. After a Hagerstown run in the bottom half, Welinson Baez drove in a run on a SAC fly making it 2- 1 and Gus Milner added an RBI single in the 3rd inning to put the BlueClaws up 3-1.
From there, Jhonny Nunez settled down, getting his club into the 7th without allowing another run. An Andrew Cruse 6th inning throwing error preceded an RBI single by Francisco Guzman making it 3-2 before the Suns took the lead in the 8th.
Cruse, in his 5th start of the year, allowed just two runs, one earned, over six innings of work.
Adrian Cardenas was 3-3 with a walk and a run scored for Lakewood, who is now 16-17 in one-run games.
The series concludes on Tuesday night at 7:05. Lakewood will send LHP Antonio Bastardo (3-0, 0.72) to the hill. The lefty will make his 5th start; he had the lowest ERA in June among all SAL pitchers. LHP Yunior Novoa (5-7, 3.93) throws for the Suns.
