Knoxville Smokies News Release
Jacksonville, Fla. - Bucky Jacobsen homered for the third time in as many games, but it wasn't enough as Jacksonville (60-66, 29-28) came from behind in a 3-2 win and closed the Smokies lead in the East Division to 2 ½ games. Tennessee (31-25, 66-60) struck out a season high 18 times Monday night at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Jacobsen homered to lead off the second inning against Suns starter Greg Miller. It was one of the few mistakes on the night for Miller, the 18 year-old southpaw making just his fourth Double A start. Miller struck out 13 over 6 2/3 innings but didn't figure in the decision. Shaun Boyd doubled against Miller in the seventh inning and scored on a pinch hit double by Chris Duncan.
Greg Bauer (6-4) threw just one pitch - getting Papo Bolivar to ground out to end the seventh - and picked up the win.
Jacksonville won the game in the seventh against the Tennessee bullpen. Jeremy Cook (0-2) allowed a leadoff single to Nick Theodorou and watched as a Victor Rodriguez reached on a bunt. Following a sacrifice by Edwin Bellorin, Josh Kinney replaced Cook. Nick Alvarez delivered a pinch hit RBI groundout to tie the game at two. The Suns won it on a Jason Repko triple that scored Rodriguez.
The Smokies were shutout by the Jacksonville bullpen, but threatened in the eighth. Tennessee loaded the bases, but Jason Frasor struck out Shaun Boyd to end the inning. Frasor struck out four over 1 2/3 innings to earn his 13th save.
The Suns jumped on starter Julio Villalon (4-6) for four runs in the first inning. Jason Repko led off with a triple and scored on Reggie Abercrombie's double. Tarrick Brock was walked and scored on a one out single by Brennan King. Following a walk to Nick Theodorou to load the bases, Victor Rodriguez delivered a two run single to put the Suns up 4-0. Monday night's game was delayed by rain for :59 minutes.
The Smokies conclude their series at Jacksonville Tuesday night at 6:05 ET with Pat Collins (0-1, 4.91) pitching against Heath Totten (10-10, 3.35).
