Jacksonville, Fla. - California League Most Valuable Player Reid Brignac recorded five hits with a homerun Thursday, his best night since a Double-A promotion, as he led the Montgomery Biscuits to a 10-0 victory against the Jacksonville Suns.
The Montgomery victory completed a five-game series sweep while sending the Suns to their seventh consecutive loss.
With the loss the Suns fell to an overall record of 79-51 and 31-29 in the second half. Jacksonville has now lost seven straight games and has been outscored in that time 48-12.
Montgomery opened the scoring on Suns starter T.J. Nall in the first inning. After loading the bases with no outs, Patrick Breen later drove home a run on a groundout to make it a 1-0 Biscuits lead.
The Biscuits again loaded the bases with no outs in the third inning against Nall, but this time took advantage of a Suns mistake. After Nall struck out the next two batters he induced a groundball to first base that Suns 1B A.J. Zapp misplayed allowing two runs to score. Another run later scored on a wild pitch and Montgomery opened a 4-0 lead over Jacksonville.
In the fourth inning Reid Brignac recorded his third hit of the game, a two-run homerun to the top of the right field bleachers that opened a 6-0 Montgomery lead. Brignac finished the game 5-5 with a homerun, two RBI and two runs scored.
On the other side Montgomery starter Jason Cromer looked strong while pitching six shutout innings. The Suns recorded four hits and four walks off of Cromer while striking out six times.
Montgomery added to the lead in the ninth inning off of Suns reliever Casey Hoorelbeke as Patrick Breen hit a grand slam homerun into the front row of the right field bleachers to finish the scoring at 10-0.
Cromer improved to 3-5 in the victory while T.J. Nall fell to 9-7 in the loss.
The Suns open the final five-game home series of the regular season Friday against the Tennessee Smokies with a 7:05 p.m. opening pitch. The Suns will wear special satin blue jerseys that will be auctioned off after the game. It's also Strike Out Crime Night with the Justice Coalition. Police and firefighters will take the field at 3:05 p.m. for a special baseball game and after the Suns game fans can enjoy Friday Family Fireworks. Tickets are available by calling the Suns box office at 904.358.2846 or by visiting jaxsuns.com.
