Suns Dominate in Run Shortened Game, Winning 13-6

The Pittsfield Suns (18-19) were able to continue their winnings ways in a rain shortened slugfest, winning 13-6 against the Torrington Titans (14-23). Derek Gardella drove in five runs to lead the offense in a game that saw four players card multi-hit games in just seven innings.

The Suns did not wait long to get the scoring started with five runs in the first inning. The Suns took advantage of Titans started Mike Gibbons' lack of control. The Suns only got two hits in the five run inning but took advantage of four walks and a hit by pitch. Rob McLam had the big hit of the inning, driving in two with a ground ball single to right that scored Kyle Singleton and Brendan Slattery.

Jon Luthe made the start for the Suns and went five innings, striking out four, and giving up just two earned runs. Luthe, though, didn't have to do much to get his first win of the season with the offense hitting the way it was. The offense put up another three runs in the second inning.

Brendan Slattery and Derek Gardella had back to back doubles that brought home three runs that pushed the lead to 8-2 after just two innings. Slattery and Gardella both had their biggest games of the season. Gardella went 2-3, driving in five runs and scoring two himself. Slattery went 2-2 with two RBI and four runs scored.

After scoring two more in the fourth inning, the Titans tried to make it interesting with one run in the fifth and three in sixth to maek it 10-6. The Suns were able to get three back in the sixth to re-establish their dominance in the game and push the lead back to 13-6. Rob McLam drove in his third and fourth runs of the game with his first triple of the season.

The game was initially delayed for rain the top of the seventh but the umpires eventually decided to call the game and make it an official Suns win.

With the win, the Suns moved with in half a game of fourth place in the FCBL standings. The Suns next play tomorrow night in Torrington against these same Titans. The Suns next home game is Monday, July 29th against the Torrington Titans.
