Jacksonville, Fla. - Matt Dominguez drove in four runs, including a two-run home run and a two-run triple, leading the Jacksonville Suns (3-1) to the South Division Championship with an 8-3 win over the Mobile BayBears (1-3) Sunday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
The Suns will face the North Division champion Tennessee Smokies in the best-of-five Southern League Championship Series beginning Tuesday at Smokies Park in Kodak, Tenn., in a repeat of the 2009 Championship Series which the Suns won three games to one. The only other repeat teams in Southern League Championship Series history was in 2006 and 2007 when the Montgomery Biscuits and Huntsville Stars met for the crown, with Montgomery winning both series.
Suns starter Jose Rosario (1-0) allowed one run and one hit over five innings for the winning decision. BayBears starter Kyler Newby (0-1) fell in the loss, giving up three runs and four hits over four innings.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the second inning as Ryan Curry scored Lee Mitchell from first base with a two-out double for a 1-0 lead. The Suns added to the lead in the fourth inning when Vinny Rottino led off with a single before a two-run home run from Matt Dominguez, his second of the series, opening a 3-0 lead.
Mobile got on the board in the fifth inning when Jake Elmore walked and later scored on a Sean Coughlin groundout for a 3-1 score.
The Suns added to the lead in the sixth inning when Dominguez walked, stole second base, moved to third on a throwing error and scored on a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 score.
Jacksonville blew the game open with a four-run seventh inning. Lorenzo Scott walked and stole second base before moving to third on an infield hit by Ozzie Martinez. Rottino next beat out an infield single to score Scott for a 5-1 lead before a throwing error on the play moved Martinez to third and Rottino to second. Dominguez next belted a triple to right-centerfield to bring in both runners for the 7-1 lead. Jeff Corsaletti next singled home Dominguez for the 8-1 score.
Mobile finished the scoring with a two-run eighth inning, including two-out RBI on a double from Konrad Schmidt and a single from Ryan Wheeler.
The Suns open the 2010 Southern League Championship Series against the Tennessee Smokies on Tuesday at Smokies Park in Kodak, Tenn. Live radio coverage is available on WFXJ-AM 930 and online at jaxsuns.com.
