PRESCOTT VALLEY, AZ - Mike Spillane's 36 saves allowed two first period goals by the Arizona Sundogs to hold up for a 2-1 win over the Allen Americans on Wednesday night at Tim's Toyota Center.
The win snapped a seven-game losing skid for the Sundogs to begin their final home stand of the season. Spillane turned aside 13 shots in the third period to hold the Americans off the board for the win.
The Sundogs took control of the game with a pair of first period goals. Kevin Petovello redirected Kyle Hood's centering pass just 1:56 into the contest for his 12th of the season. Craig Macdonald then added a shorthanded goal with just over a minute to play on a slap shot from the left circle. Macdonald's tally was the first shorthanded goal allowed by the Americans on the road this season.
Former Sundog Jeff Martens cut into the Sundogs lead with the second period's only goal after burying a rebound in the slot at 7:16
All three power plays in the contest belonged to Allen who went scoreless on the man-advantage.
Jon Groenheyde took the loss in his first career start, stopping 25 shots.
The Arizona Sundogs close out their regular season this weekend with a pair of games against the visiting Rapid City Rush. Friday's game is slated for a 7:05 PM MST start and the action can be heard on Cattle Country 94.3 FM.
