Prescott Valley, AZ - The Arizona Sundogs' special teams were, key for their win tonight at the BOK Center against the Tulsa Oilers. Adam Russo shut out the oilers with a final score, 5-0.
Kip Brennan and Daniel Amesbury dropped their gloves right off the face-off with neither guy landing any hits. The Sundogs finally put themselves on the board with 2:49 remaining in the first period after Kevin Baker scored on the power play, Derek LeBlanc and Jeff Kyrzakos each tallied the assists. With 1:43 remaining in the opening period Chad Nehring was issued two minutes for tripping sending the Oilers on the power play and giving them the man-advantage for 17 seconds going into the second period.
Arizona registered two power play goals in the second period. Nehring, 4:07 into the middle frame chipped the puck past goalie Dan Clarke with Johan Ryd and Matt McCready tallying the assists. Less than 10 minutes later McCready scored on the power play after Tulsa's Ryan Menei was called for his slash on Mario Larocque . Six seconds left in the second period and Amesbury was issued a four minute double minor penalty for roughing and LeBlanc was issued two minutes for roughing allowing the Sundogs to begin the third period on the power play.
Baker picked up his second goal of the night, 1:13 into the final 20 minutes. Mario Larocque collected his fourth goal of the season and the Sundogs' only even strength goal of the night.
Adam Russo took the shutout win for the Sundogs making 22 saves. Arizona outshot Tulsa 40-22. Arizona was 4-7 on the power play, their best power play record in a single game this season and Tulsa was 0-4. Baker will look to continue his point streak, having collected eight points in two games. The Sundogs will meet the Ft. Worth Brahmas on Friday for two games.
