Sun Microsystems and CFL Huddle Up to Deliver Real-Time Content

Published on November 13, 2003 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

MARKHAM, ON / REGINA, SK -- November 14, 2003 -- Sun Microsystems of Canada Inc. and the Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today that football enthusiasts across the country will have direct access from www.cfl.ca to real-time play-by-play and game statistics during this year's Grey Cup Championship game being held this Sunday, November 16th in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Capturing and building on the raw energy and hard hitting action of professional football in Canada, the two companies are leveraging their technology products/services and marketing partnership agreement, announced in June of this year, to more effectively engage with fans and key stakeholders. This launch represents another significant milestone in the Sun and CFL partnership and demonstrates the continued efforts toward web enabling the CFL's core business functions.

Using Sun's hardware, Sun(TM) Open Network Environment (Sun ONE) software and services, the CFL is updating its once static, informational site to become a web-based marketing and administrative tool. The Sun ONE infrastructure will enhance the site's functionality and content through the provision of web services tailored to each of its key audiences. All application development, including development using Java ™ programming language, is managed by Toronto-based, Sun iForce (SM) partner, Vortisol Inc. "The introduction of real-time content for CFL fans across the country is the first milestone in a plan that will see business and consumer communications dramatically enhanced through the Sun alliance. Sun is a proven leader in developing business operations solutions and interactive programming for other major sporting leagues. Their experience with the National Hockey League and Major League Baseball is proving invaluable in the design and implementation of the CFL program," said Brent Scrimshaw, Senior Vice President of Marketing at the CFL.

For die-hard fans, the revamped site is designed to be the definitive, interactive resource for sports entertainment. Defying the "couch potato" mentality, cfl.ca allows viewers to pull up live, up-to-the-minute player and team stats and game scores -- all with a click of the mouse. What's more, fans can follow the big game and their favourite players from anywhere in the world, ideal for fans who do not have access to the TV or radio broadcasts.

"We're thrilled to collaborate with CFL to bring a new and exciting experience to football fans and media all across Canada," said Brad Keates, Vice-president of Marketing and Partners for Sun Canada. "With Sun's extensive resources and innovative technology, we're committed to making this year's Grey Cup game an experience unlike any in the past. Together, CFL and Sun are taking viewers from their living rooms to the sidelines and into media broadcast booths."
