Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - The Fort Myers Miracle ran their winning streak to nine straight games on Friday night by shutting out the St. Lucie Mets 6-0 at Hammond Stadium.
The Miracle pounded out 13 hits, including four by Kennys Vargas, to improve to 23-4. The Miracle won their fourth game in five tries against the Mets this season and opened up a seven game lead on St. Lucie for first place in the Florida State League South Division.
The two teams were locked in a pitchers' duel most of the night. Miracle starter Matt Summers pitched five scoreless innings and struck out six. Mets starter Noah Syndergaard was nearly as good. He held the Miracle without a run through the first five innings but finally cracked in the sixth when Vargas belted a 3-2 pitch with two outs up the middle for a single to plate Miguel Sano.
The 1-0 lead was enough for the Miracle bullpen, but the offense added five insurance runs in the seventh to pull away. With the bases loaded, Levi Michael lifted a sac fly to bring Drew Leachman home and advance a Stephen Wickens to third. Eddie Rosario followed with another sac fly to score Wickens for a 3-0 lead.
Matt Koch and Angel Morales finished the scoring with back-to-back RBI singles to make it 6-0.
Adrian Salcedo and Zack Jones each pitched two scoreless innings of relief to close out the game.
Vargas ended up 4 for 4 with two doubles. Everyone in the lineup for the Miracle registered a hit.
The Miracle (23-5) will go for the series sweep against the Mets (16-11) on Saturday at 6:05 p.m.
Saturday's game will feature an appearance by WWE Hall of Famer Jerry "The King" Lawler, who will pose for pictures and sign autographs for fans. Visit miraclebaseball.com or call (239) 768-4210 for tickets or more information.
