June 17, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - It's the middle of June, and one might think things would be quiet around the San Diego Gulls' office. That couldn't be farther from the truth. Yes, the hockey season has been over for more than a month and next season doesn't begin for another four months. But the community season is a year-around job and the Gulls have been all over the San Diego map. Here's a look at what's been going on the last couple of weeks:

June 6: Gulls Director of Ticket Sales Jesse Zellmer was appointed to the board of directors of the I AM Foundation. I AM was created for the sole purpose of "gifting great books to kids." Zellmer will spearhead the relationship between the Gulls and the I AM foundation to launch a fall book drive and create fundraising opportunities.

June 8: The Gulls, jazz star Craig Chaquico, Zany Brainy and the I AM Foundation teamed up for a summer book drive for kids. The book drive kicked off at the Zany Brainy in Mission Valley, where former Gulls player Brad Belland appeared to sign autographs. The drive will go until September. Children's books can be dropped off and donated at the following locations:

San Diego Sports Arena Administration Office Zany Brainy Stores located in Mission Valley, La Mesa and Mira Mesa The I AM Foundation office located at 3304 Fourth Ave.

June 11: Zellmer participated as a speaker for three different Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes. At each class, Zellmer discussed the basics of hockey, the importance of teamwork in a business atmosphere and the correlation between reading and success.

June 13: Mark Woolf and Gulls' staff attended Military Appreciation Day at MCAS Miramar. Woolf signed autographs and mingled with military personnel.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Aug. 25: The San Diego Sports Arena will play host to the "Gulls for Goals" celebrity hockey game on Aug. 25. Players will include Hollywood, NHL and Gulls celebrities as well as local media talents.
