Sue Bird Named WNBA Player of the Week

NEW YORK, AUG. 29 - Seattle's Sue Bird earned her first WNBA Player of the Week honor, as she led the Storm to a 3-0 mark.

Bird, a 2005 WNBA All-Star, recorded nine points, seven assists and five rebounds as Seattle defeated San Antonio on Aug. 23, 78-51. Two nights later, Bird finished with 12 points, five assists and two rebounds as Seattle knocked off Sacramento 76-63 and secured the No. 2 seed and home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. In the final game of the regular season, Bird tied her season high with 20 points and added seven assists on 7-of-12 shooting in helping the Storm defeat Phoenix 85-74. Seattle's victory over the Mercury was its ninth consecutive home win, a franchise record.

Bird led the WNBA in assists (5.9 apg), and finished fourth in three-point field-goal percentage (.437), sixth in free-throw percentage (.855) and 19th in scoring (12.1 ppg).

Other candidates for the WNBA Player of the Week were Charlotte's Sheri Sam; Connecticut's Lindsay Whalen; Houston's Sheryl Swoopes; Los Angeles' Chamique Holdsclaw; and Phoenix's Diana Taurasi.

Four networks will carry 2005 WNBA Playoffs action. ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and NBA TV will provide coverage through the conference finals. The 2005 WNBA Finals will be televised on ABC and ESPN2. For more information, go to WNBA.com.
