Sting win first road game this season

After going 0-16 to on the road to start the season, the Sting finally got their first win on the road by recording a 78-66 win over the Liberty at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, August 25. It was the largest margin of victory for the Sting this season as well as Charlotte's first victory in Madison Square Garden since 2002.

Sheri Sam finished the 2005 season strong by recording double figures in each of the last nine games, including three 20-plus point games. Over that span she averaged 16.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.2 assists. Sam also played in every game for the Sting this season and has played in 229 games, missing only one, in her seven-year WNBA career.

The Sting tied the franchise-high for most steals in a game as they recorded 17 on Saturday, August 27 against Connecticut. Charlotte finished the 2005 season ranked third in the league in steals, averaging 8.4 per game. This is the second highest total in Sting history. The Sting averaged 9.1 steals in 1998.

After averaging 59.3 points through the first 23 games of the season the Sting averaged 66.5 points through 11 games in August. The Sting also improved their rebounding averaging posting 31.3 rebounds in August after averaging 25.2 through the first 23 games.

Forward Tangela Smith finished her first season with the Sting averaging 13.6 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.65 steals and 34.3 minutes in 31 games. She posted 25 double-figure games and five games with 20-plus points. Her averages from 2005 were an improvement from 2004 when she averaged 11.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 34 games.

After being inserted into the starting line-up for the final 11 games of the season, Helen Darling averaged 7.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists. In 20 games off the bench she posted 1.5 points, 0.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
