NAHL Austin Bruins

Stymied in Shootout Again

January 10, 2015 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Austin Bruins News Release

For the second night in a row Saturday, the Minot Minotauros (24-8-4) scored a third period power play goal to force overtime before edging the Austin Bruins (18-9-10) in a shootout 3-2 at Riverside Arena in Austin.

In an evenly played first period, the Bruins lit the lamp first when Cory Dunn (Trenton, MI) followed his own centering attempt that ricocheted back to him. Dunn then buried a wrist shot past Minot goalie Atte Tolvanen (Vihti, Finland) for his second goal of the season.

The Tauros tied the game when defenseman Max Mettler (N. Mankato, MN) snapped a shot from the point through a screen into the net behind Bruins goaltender Jake Kielly (Eden Prairie, MN). Austin regained the lead at 17:19 of the first while short-handed when Nico Sturm (Augsburg, Germany) picked of a pass at the Minot blue line and raced in on a breakaway. Sturm ripped a shot off the post and in to give Austin a 2-1 lead going into the first intermission.

The second period featured a stellar performance by both goaltenders, who were solid most of the night. Kielly stopped all eight Minotauros attempts in the frame, while Tolvanen finished the period with 11 saves.

Contrasting from Friday s game that saw 116 penalty minutes, Saturday s contest featured far fewer penalty calls, as the officials let the teams play for the most part. However, at 11:43 of the third period, Bruins forward Derek Olmschenk (Lino Lakes, MN) was sent off for cross-checking. It was a call that the fans unanimously disagreed with, and on the ensuing power play the Tauros tied the game when Colton Kramer (Sioux City, IA) wrapped the puck in behind Kielly.

After another scoreless overtime, Minot won a second-consecutive shootout to complete the road sweep. Two of the five Tauros skaters scored in the breakaway relay, and none of the four Bruins shooters were able to solve Tolvanen. Minot now leads the Central Division by six points over Austin with no more meetings scheduled between the two teams in the regular season.

Next weekend, Austin opens up a home-and-home series in Lacrosse, WI against the Coulee Region Chill at 7pm Friday. The teams then return to Austin Saturday for a 7:05pm start at Riverside Arena.
