Edenton Steamers News Release

PETERSBURG, VA - The Edenton Steamers dropped both games of a doubleheader to the Petersburg Generals on Saturday night. Edenton (5-5) knocked a mere seven hits, all singles, while Petersburg (4-7) picked up its third consecutive win against the Clams.

Both Edenton starters took losses in Saturday's contests. Jesse Stinnett (0-1) was chased after surrendering six runs, three earned, on six hits while fanning three batters and walking one through three innings. Phil Graham (0-1) lasted 4.2 innings in game two, allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out 10.

Petersburg blew game one wide open with six runs in the third. Caleb Hicks plated two runs with a homer to left after a leadoff double from Ryan Cox. Chris Hicks kept things rolling with a single in the next at bat, and Adam Bauer's double brought home a second run and left runner's on second and third. After Daniel Barnett drew a two-out walk, Hunter Lipscomb tripled in the final three runs of the frame to give the Generals a 6-0 lead.

Caleb Hicks led off the fourth for the Generals, taking a pitch to the back, and a single to shallow right field from Chris Hicks sent Caleb to third. A bobbled ball by Tony Rosselli in right allowed Caleb Hicks to score, moving Chris Hicks to third. Two batters later, Brandon Purcell made it 8-0 with an RBI single.

The Clams broke the shutout in the sixth. Rosselli and Richard Cunningham singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jimbo Pernetti's groundball to second scored Rosselli. Edenton rallied for a second run in the seventh, but the Steamers ultimately fell 8-2 in game one.

Game two scoring began with a Generals run in the third. Chris Hicks drew a walk to lead off the frame, stealing second to put a runner in scoring position. A wild pitch and a balk from Graham brought Hicks the rest of the way around the bases to give Petersburg a 1-0 lead after three.

The Generals padded their lead with two runs in the fifth. Chris Hicks knocked a one-out double to spark the charge, coming home on a Cox single two batters later. Lipscomb followed with a walk, putting runners on first and second, and Jake Rolly's single in the next at bat gave Petersburg a 3-0.

The Steamers made it a game with two runs in the top of the sixth. Ben Prada drew a one-out walk before a Cunningham single and Trey Hair walk loaded the bases with two gone. Thatcher Coleman cracked a single in the next at bat to plate Edenton's only two runs of the contest.

Barnett gave Petersburg some insurance with a leadoff homerun over the right-field wall, and the Generals shut down the Clams in the seventh to take a 4-2 victory.

After taking Sunday off, the Edenton Steamers head to Morehead City to take on the Marlins for the first time this season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The Teal and Black's next home game is Wednesday, June 15, when they host the Marlins.
